Lewin & Stanley Universal Planes at secondhandtools

Lewin Universal Plane

Onto the site this Sunday (7th) goes a very good example of the Lewin Improved Universal Plane
complete with the 18 cutters and all the parts including the spurs & locking screws and instructions.
The Lewin is a fairly recent (late 1940′s) Universal Plane made by the Oxted Mill Ltd. Oxted Surrey
(which seems to have vanished from record ).

The first version had 18 cutters, the second version had 19 cutters.  An expensive plane at the time advertised by different retailers in the Woodworker and often referred to as the 615 as the original price was £6. 15s. 0d.

The Cornish Workshop site gives goodinformation about the Lewin.
If you haven’t visited the Cornish Workshop site or its blog then you should do -
one of the best woodworking sites out, I think.

Stanley Tools 55 Plane Label

The Stanley 55 was first manufactured in 1897 and was an
extension of the Stanley 45.
In theory it is easy to use once you know what you are doing!

There is a very good article on Stanley Combination Planes (and how to use them)
on the Museum of Woodworking Tools site .
